There were rumblings of a federal election in the air. The Liberals under Michael Ignatieff had been quiet all summer, to the point where people were starting to ask, "where's Mikey?" All of a sudden there are rumours of an election-forcing measure from the Liberals. Then Thomas Saras, president of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, informed us Ignatieff wants to speak to us. He'd already spoken to the NEPMCC once, so to put one and one together, we arrived at the September 9th Round Table meeting. So we hoped Ignatieff will make an announcement of a non-confidence vote in Parliament at our meeting.

Ignatieff started talking about how the Liberals and most Canadians were disappointed with the Conservatives, but gave no actual specifics. And no announcement of a non-confidence vote.

Ignatieff finished off by saying, "we cleaned up the (former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian) Mulroney deficit and we'll clean up the (Conservative Prime Minister Stephen) Harper deficit without raising taxes." Close, close, come on, say the magic words ... please. No, he didn't say them.

Besides, he didn't point out that the Liberals cleaned up "Mulroney's mess" by cutting off the transfer payments to the provinces who then had to cut off the transfer payments to the municipalities both of whom had to raise taxes and reduce services. No specifics on how they would "clean up Harper's mess.”

So Ignatieff left the meeting without giving any indication of when he would "pull the plug,” but then he never promised to either.

Out on the street word has it that the socialist twins Jack Layton of the New Democratic Party and Gilles Duceppe of the Parti Québécois will back up the Conservative government, making this the union of extremes. But this is probably because most Canadians don't want an election and will severely spank the party that calls for one.

However on that very day pollster Nik Nanos declared that while the Liberals were holding steady the Conservatives were gaining in popularity. So it is likely Ignatieff was going to announce he was going to call for a non-confidence vote art the Round Table, but with the bad news he was held back. We might still have been the ones that the big announcement was saved for…

Being Very Constructive24 Sep 2009 21:28
Should you really be commenting on business acumen in this context?
Why would I or anyone else subscribe to the paper version just to get stale opinion pieces about Canadian politicians?
There's no need for you to fear constructive criticism.
perhaps there is a reason24 Sep 2009 13:34
Guess you are not a subscriber. From a business perspective it would be silly to post something for free online before it had appeared in the paid, print issue. Just guessing here, but that would be the rationale for identifying print articles as such online - perhaps get new subscribers? Then again, seeing as some seem to know all about how Eesti Elu online operates, perhaps you could illuminate readers here? Thanks for your time and positive contribution!

I don't get it - do you wait around for the print version to come out before you post a story here? How does that make any sense?
