The University of Minnesota Immigration History Research Center Newsletter of Spring/Summer 2005 just reached this newspaper. Of note to our readers is a brief article about an addition to the University’s Research Center’s collection of papers. Certainly many among those readers remember scouter Herbert Michelson.

The newsletter informs that the University’s Michelson collection has increased with a donation of 4 linear feet of materials, supplementing the Centre’s existing collection of 11 linear feet of Michelson’s papers.

Herbert Michelson was a leading figure in the Estonian American scouting movement during the mid-late 20th century, as well as a journalist, author and activist in the Estonian American community.

The supplement of records pertain chiefly to his service as director at the Breyer Scout Training Area in Elkins Park, PA, which attracted participants from throughout the United States and other countries. Included are correspondence, organizational meeting materials, articles, and clippings.

The newsletter also features a photograph of Enda-Mai Michelson-Holland, director of the Estonian Archives in the U.S. Inc, and Juhan Simonson, former head of the Estonian American Council Inc, presenting a plaque to Prof. Rudolph J. Vecoli, IHRC’s director, who retired at the end of July, on behalf of the Estonian American community.

The newsletter also makes mention of monetary support and donated collections provided the center by the American Association of Latvians and the Estonian Archives of the U.S.
