Two Estonians will be traveling to the U.S. beginning February 28 to participate in Department of State-sponsored International Visitor programs, one on promoting civil society through social media and the other on combating trafficking in persons. These programs, which focus on exposing emerging foreign leaders to American society and institutions, can have a profound impact on participants and benefit their work in their home country.
An Estonian organizer of a local grassroots-based news site will participate in first program, which is designed to show how new media and social networking tools promote citizens’ rights and improve transparency and accountability.
An Estonian state prosecutor will participate in the second, which will provide an overview of U.S. methods for combating trafficking in persons, including prosecution of and enforcement against traffickers and the social reintegration of victims of trafficking.
