For his girlfriend, the former Conservative Party communications chief Carrie Symonds, 31, it will be a first child, due in the early summer. The couple also announced this week that they are engaged to be wed, which will be her first marriage.

News that he is about to become a father for at least the sixth time (he is known to have five children by two women, including one whose existence was only revealed by order of a court, and he is the subject of many paternity rumours) could hardly have come at a better time, politically.
The promise of the pitter patter of little feet in the Downing Street official residence is likely to briefly refocus public attention away from Brexit negotiations and coronavirus fears toward Johnson’s family life, and create a useful veneer of domesticity on Johnson’s image after a life of shambolic romance.
