NATO Secretary General visited Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania

The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, visited Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania on Thursday 9 July and Friday 10 July 2009.

In Riga he met with President Valdis Zatlers, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins and Minister of Defence Imants Viesturs Liegis.

In Tallinn he met with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Prime Minister Andrus Ansip and Minister of Defense Jaak Aaviksoo.

In Vilnius he met with President Valdas Adamkus, President-Elect Mrs. Dalia Grybauskaite, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vygaudas Usackas and Minister of Defence Rasa Jukneviciene.

The main topics of discussion during the trip were NATO's ongoing operation in Afghanistan, the Alliance's Strategic Concept, NATO's relations with Russia, defence expenditures and Allied defence arrangements, including the air policing mission.
