Ontario Public Libraries celebrate Family Literacy Day CNW
27 Jan 2004 EWR Online
TORONTO, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - Libraries across Ontario will be celebrating Family Literacy Day today, with events that promote the importance of reading and learning as a family, Culture Minister Madeleine Meilleur announced.
"The McGuinty government is a proud supporter of early literacy and providing children the opportunity to learn and explore with their families," said Meilleur. "I encourage families to get involved in the activities held at
their local libraries on Family Literacy Day, as early literacy programs are essential to successful infant and preschool child development."
Every year, various events are organized on Family Literacy Day at Ontario libraries, such as storytelling and crafts at the Napanee Branch Library, and a birthday party and a puppet show at the Stoney Creek Branch of the Hamilton Public Library.
"Kids need strong reading, writing and math skills to achieve success when they are in school and after they graduate," said Gerard Kennedy,Minister of Education. "Community organizations such as libraries help to ensure that students have the resources and skills that they need to succeed in today's knowledge-based economy."
"Reading is important from day one and helps children arrive at school ready to learn. Whether it's a storybook or a cookbook, I encourage parents to make reading with your child a regular part of every day," said Dr. Marie
Bountrogianni, Minister of Children's Services.
The McGuinty government supports 1,200 public library service outlets across Ontario in order to help build strong communities and contribute to Ontario's social vitality, education and growth. The Ministry of Culture
provides an annual allocation of $30 million to support public libraries in Ontario, including more than $18 million in annual operating grants to more than 390 public library boards, First Nations and communities that contract
with other communities for library service.
