OTTAWA – Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs travelled to Tallinn, Estonia as the head of the Canadian Delegation to attend the funeral of the former President Lennart Meri.

Van Loan stated that "Lennart Meri was the personification of the Estonian spirit and nation. A scholar, an artist, a patriot and a visionary - he lived the suffering of his people, and with quiet courage led Estonia into freedom and its rightful place in Europe. Estonia, and the world, have lost a man of dignity to whom much is owed - and who is fondly remembered."

Nice of Peter to make the effort. He holds Estonians in pretty high esteem, which sometimes makes me wonder; if he only knew how nasty many of them tend to be towards each other in everyday life. However, President Meri was a tremendous statesman for Estonia, and among the last of a great generation of fine intellects.
