Peter Van Loan’s position should be considered
06 Jun 2007 Adu Raudkivi
As much as the Honourable Peter Van Loan has been greeted as a long lost Estonian son, we must remember also that he is a member of the government and the cabinet of Canada. Being that, he has certain restrictions. One is not to interfere with other ministries, no matter how much one may want to. What private conversations might have gone on between Minister Van Loan and Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay we'll never know.
Canada is in no position to condemn Russia, militarily or economically so what exactly would a rebuke from Minister Van Loan amount to? The opponent of Russia is the United States. When has Canada ever challenged Russia (or the USSR) without the US being in front of it?
