"Canada is facing a growing threat of cyber attacks from hostile governments and criminals that could cripple critical infrastructure and financial systems," said Van Loan.
"Indicating to past cyber attacks in Georgia and Estonia that drove these government to a stop," said Van Loan. "threats could come from foreign governments, profit driven criminals or menacing youth getting a kick out of causing havoc."
"I think it's fair to say just about every day somewhere someone's trying to breach some of our security systems in our computers," said Van Loan.
"Potential infiltration and attacks plotted and executed over the internet have emerged as a major security threat of common interest to Canada, the U.S. and other Western countries," said Van Loan.
"The government will work to share the best resources and practices with the U.S. , but the complex problem will take more than financial investment. It requires a strategy to keep one step ahead in the race," said Van Loan.
This is a severe problem that can affect all forms of transportation and commerce.
