It is easier to get a job in some European countries than others. The quality of the jobs available differs widely, too. It was found that of the 17 European countries included in the study, Estonia, Norway, the UK, and Austria offer the best job prospects and compare favourably even with the United States — the country often taken as the benchmark for economic dynamism and job opportunities.
It is concluded that the top countries do a lot of right things – from the quality of the labour force, including education and training, through to the quality of their labour market policies and dynamism of job creation. At the same time it is concluded that much depends on overall economic performance.
According to the study, Estonia has recovered well from the recent global economic crisis with employment rates only slightly below pre-crisis rates. The harmonised unemployment rate and youth unemployment rate in Estonia are close to OECD average.
Many of the new jobs on offer in Europe come in the form of fixed-term temporary contracts, often with less-than-ideal working hours, little flexibility, and low pay. In Estonia the number of temporary jobs is the lowest in Europe, with about 3 per cent of the total number of jobs.
Estonia also has the lowest number of people who are working part-time but would prefer working full-time.
