On September 12th, 2015, 70 golfers from across North America gathered for the 19th Annual EGO Golf Tournament at the beautiful Shawneeki Golf Course just east of Newmarket, Ontario. The weather was cool and cloudy during the putting contest and the first 14 holes of play. The final rounds were played in a light drizzle but all the players finished their rounds.

As the golfers arrived for registration they were received by hot coffee and kringel. Lunch was a choice of hamburger or bbq chicken breast on a bun. A le Coq beers imported from Estonia, were made available to all players at a subsidized price of $5.00 per beer. Tarmo Saks who had just arrived from Estonia a week earlier was our first player to get himself an imported Estonian beer from the bar.

George Lacy, the Shawneeki Golf Course Pro welcomed the EGO golfers and went over some of the rules pertaining to the scramble play. Jaak Jarve, EGO president also welcomed this year’s golfers and reminded them that, due to the tournament nature of this event, no “gimmies” or “mulligans” will be allowed for scoring purposes.

At about 12:50 pm, the shotgun EGO tournament carts rolled out from the clubhouse to the awaiting tees and fairways. The course was in excellent shape, and the greens were fast.

When the players came into the clubhouse after their round of golf they were treated to Ulle Veltmann’s “liha pirukad”( a meat pastry). Dinner was prepared by the Shawneeki chef Lundeen. The chicken and rib entrée was delicieux! Many went back for seconds on those tasty, spicy ribs.
The Estonian Toronto Credit Union offered a $300.00 GIC gift certificate from a ballot box where all the EGO players had submitted their draw tickets. ETCU representative Priit Nikker picked the winning ballot. The winner was Peeter Nielander. Following dinner, Jaak Jarve distributed out the raffle winning prizes. The raffle generated $880.00 for the EGO tournament. Some of the top prizes included Maple Leaf hockey tickets, free rounds of golf at the Shawneeki golf course, LCBO gift cards and LCBO bottles and bundles, EKKT art albums, divot repair tools, EGO coffee cup holders, golf lamp and golfing mounted posters, speaker mount for an Ipod, a women’s windbreaker, and Saku golf towels . Many thanks for the golfers who donated many premium raffle prizes.

Thank you George Lacy and the entire Shawneeki Golf Course team, you made us feel at home again.

See you all again next year, our 20th anniversary!
