• To artist Olja Müller, “Roots” symbolize the hidden part of trees as the unseen parts of our nature. The struggling trees along the Rouge River, with their hidden roots exposed, are both an embodiment of the survival of the human spirit and a metaphor for the tranisent nature of life.
“Roots” is an exposition of large format works done on gessoed paper to which an intense abstract wash of gouache or watercolour has been applied. The highlights of the subject are then pulled out with a wet cloth and additional values are worked back into the surface with drawing media and gouache or watercolour.
The “Roots” show for Olja Müller is the culmination of twelve years of Ontario College of Art and Design part-time evening classes and two full years of study. It is the realization of a life-time dream of becoming an artist. Her final year a OACD as a thesis student opened the floodgates of her unbridled creativity. Olja Müller is now ready to take a very wild ride down the river of life and to let her roots become fully exposed.
