It was on the Russian TV channel NTV in a documentary entitled ‘Our man in Tallinn’, that Uno Puusepp revealed he was a spy for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the KGB, while working for Estonia’s KaPo.
He said that he had discovered his true allegiance was to Russia after joining KaPo. Nikolai Yermakov, Puusepp`s former KGB colleague, recruiter and handler added that Puusepp had developed grievances against the `Estonian establishment` and was not motivated by financial profit. (Yermakov, previously a resident of Estonia and KGB operative had also been involved in the recruitment and handling for Russian intelligence of former KGB and then KaPo technical services expert Vladimir Veitman, and also Herman Simm, the Estonian Defence Ministry`s security chief and governor of national and NATO military secrets.)
He had previously been a wiretap expert for the KGB, starting in the 1970s. Retiring from KaPo in 2011 he moved permanently to Moscow. Recruited by the FSB in 1966 he claimed to have supplied Moscow with information on Western intelligence agencies, including the CIA and MI6 and Germany`s BND. The Russian documentary noted that everything to which the director of KaPo was privy Puusepp passed along to the FSB. However, some have insisted that Puusepp`s access to such material was very limited due to the application of information compartmentalization – a `need to know` practice that helped to keep secrets secret.(Pikemalt Eesti Elu 9. jaanuari paberelehes)
