The Sputnik V vaccine, developed in Russia, has been shown to prevent the disease in 91.6 percent of those infected, based on clinical trials. According to interim results published in the Lancet, the vaccine also protects against severe disease transmission.
A total of 21,977 people participated in the clinical trials, of whom nearly 75 percent were injected with Sputnik V. The results showed that 16 subjects became ill with COVID-19 within three weeks after vaccination. Of those who received saline instead of the actual vaccine, however, 62 had COVID-19. The vaccine's effectiveness is thus 91.6 percent.
It is the third most widely used vaccine to prevent infection in more than 90 percent of those vaccinated. Of the approved vaccines, Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna are relatively effective.
