Ryanair cancels flights on six routes from Tallinn

Ryanair has suspended ticket sales and cancelled flights from Tallinn to Billund, Milan (Bergamo), Paphos, Rome, Venice (Treviso) and Vienna from April to October.

Margot Holts, Head of Marketing & Communications at Tallinn Airport, says that only four direct routes will be affected, as passengers will still be able to fly to Billund (with airBaltic) and to Milan’s Malpensa Airport.

The airport received its first reports of cancellations from passengers last night, when it was noticed that Ryanair had suspended ticket sales to these destinations on its website. “It came as a complete surprise to us, because the airline confirmed at a meeting just last week that it would be operating 11 routes from Tallinn this summer,” Holts explained. “They haven’t informed us of any dissatisfaction with the routes or our airport charges either, or flagged up any schedule changes. We’re hoping to hear from them as soon as possible whether the cancellations are down to a shortage of aircraft or some other reason, and what their plans are for these routes in the 2025-2026 winter season.”

Ryanair has cut a significant number of its routes in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Spain for the 2025 summer season, attributing this to increasing aviation charges. In the latter half of 2024 the airline also announced that it was facing problems with aircraft availability and closed its base in Billund and reduced its number of aircraft in Bergamo.

Ryanair has been aware of the introduction of a €3 security charge at Tallinn Airport since September, and confirmed that it would be operating 11 routes out of the Estonian capital during the summer schedule despite this. “If the cancellations are related to the charge, then the airline could have avoided customer dissatisfaction by making the changes to its timetables when preparing its summer schedule and before ticket sales started,” Holts remarked. “It could also have informed the airport of its intentions in advance.”

Ryanair is one of the most profitable but also one of the most controversial airlines in the world. “It’s incredibly popular among travellers for its low fares, but is just as unpopular for its rules, baggage policy and ticketing tactics,” Holts said. “It’s also something of a double-edged sword for airports, since the airline brings passengers in and connects local travellers to exciting destinations, but can behave very erratically.”

"Ryanair will still be flying from Tallinn to Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, London (Stansted), Milan (Malpensa) and Stockholm, and there will be plenty of other destinations to choose from this summer, with 49 in total – just one less than last year”, said Holt.
