Secretary of State Augustine presents the Canada Award to Vision TV documentary
TORONTO, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of
Women) Jean Augustine presented the Canada Award to the Vision TV documentary
entitled Carry Me Home: The Story and Music of Nathaniel Dett Chorale,
directed by Liam Romalis and Gerald Packer, and produced by Liam Romalis, on
October 18, 2003.
"Nathaniel Dett was an extraordinary figure in the world of black music,
and the multi-racial choral ensemble performing his work in the documentary is
an inspiration to all Canadians," said Secretary of State Augustine, at the
Gemini Awards presentation on Saturday.
"It is important for Canadians of all ethnic, racial, cultural and
religious backgrounds to see themselves reflected on the national television
landscape. I applaud directors Liam Romalis and Gerald Packer for showing us
how harmony is not just a musical concept, but an important social one as
well," she added.
The Canada Award is sponsored by the Multiculturalism Program of the
Department of Canadian Heritage. This award, along with the Prix du
Multiculturalisme, which is presented for excellence in French television
programming, have been presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and
Television at the annual Gemini and Gémeaux Awards since 1988. These awards
honour excellence in mainstream television programming that reflects the
racial and cultural diversity of Canada. The award serves to encourage
Canadians of diverse ethnic backgrounds to tell their stories, thus fostering
greater cultural understanding between all Canadians.
The Gemini Awards and Les Prix Gémeaux are organized by the Academy of
Canadian Cinema and Television. The Gemini Documentary, News, and Sports Gala,
held on October 18, 2003, is one of the three major high-profile Gemini Awards
events that celebrate outstanding achievements in the Canadian film and
television industries. Many of the Gemini nominees have received support
through the Canadian Television Fund and the Canadian Film or Video Production
Tax Credit.
