Washington, DC – A special online Gulag exhibit, the newest feature of the Global Museum on Communism, will be previewed on November 30 in Washington, DC at the National Press Club.
The fundraising event is organized by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, in cooperation with the Freda Utley Foundation, and will take place from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the First Amendment Lounge of the National Press Club (14th and F Streets, NW).
In addition to exclusive essays written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Applebaum, eminent Soviet historian Dr. Richard Pipes, and Estonian author and journalist Imbi Paju, the exhibit features a detailed, interactive 3D virtual Gulag camp environment that allows viewers to walk through and experience a Gulag camp, including barracks, administrative offices, mess hall, isolation shacks and other buildings typical to a Gulag camp. The exhibit will also feature rich multimedia historical timelines, maps, with image and video galleries.

“The Gulag was the world’s largest prison,” said Foundation Chairman Lee Edwards, “filled with political prisoners given multi-year sentences for alleged ‘crimes’ against the Soviet regime. Now for the first time, thanks to cutting edge technology, people will be able to visit a Gulag camp on-line and see for themselves what the historian Robert Conquest called a ‘system of unexampled coldblooded inhumanity.’”

The GMOC (http://www.globalmuseumoncommu...) was launched in June 2009 and has achieved nearly 400,000 views from 174 countries around the world.

Members of the Media are welcome to attend, but should notify the Foundation prior to the event at: (202) 627-9018 .

Following a reception, guests will receive a catalog of the Gulag Collection paintings by former Soviet forced labor camp prisoner Nikolai Getman. A selection of those paintings is now on tour through the United States, including at the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush Presidential libraries.

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation was established in 1993 to honor the more than 100 million victims of communism worldwide. It is dedicated to educating this generation and future generations about the grim legacy of communism.

Established by Authorization of Congressional Resolution H.R. 3000 & Presidential Approval, Public Law 103-199
