Get ready for a night of quirky humour and thoughtful commentaries as well as a chance to mingle and enjoy the bar and Estonian “kringel” – sweet coffee bread.
Our films are a mix from Estonian and Canadian-Estonian filmmakers (many of whom live right here in Toronto) as well as the occasional film by non-Estonians as they observe and comment on our culture.
Although Toronto is home to the largest population of ethnic Estonians outside of Estonia, many people still don’t know much about us so here are a few fun facts. Did you know:
- Estonians invented Skype
- Estonia was the first country in the world to use online political voting
The population of Estonia is around 1.3 million people and the country rests on the Baltic Sea, just south of Finland - The U.S. looked to Estonia for some of our expertise in the world of cyber security
- The well-known composer, Arvo Pärt (elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996), is Estonian
- Every five years, more than 25,000 Estonians gather in the capital, Tallinn, to sing in perfect harmony together while more than 100,000 sit and watch them in the special amphitheatre built for this event (the next Songfest is scheduled for 2019)
All films are either in English or in Estonian with English subtitles, as we welcome everybody.
