Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of Victoria Day, which commemorates the birth of Queen Victoria, and marks the official celebration of the Sovereign’s birthday:
“Today, Laureen and I join Canadians across the country in celebrating the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.
“On this special occasion, let us honour The Queen’s lifetime of devotion to Canada and celebrate the unique and historic ties that connect us with the United Kingdom.
“Last year we were proud to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. One of the highlights of that tribute was the creation of the Diamond Jubilee Medal in celebration of Her Majesty’s extraordinary sixty-year record of service. This honour, which has since been presented to 60,000 Canadians for their contributions to Canada, is a fitting testimony to Her Majesty’s remarkable legacy – one which will be preserved and cherished by recipients in homes across the country.
“On behalf of all Canadians, we offer Her Majesty The Queen our sincerest wishes of health and happiness on this joyous occasion.”
