The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to mark the beginning of Hanukkah:

“This Sunday after sundown, friends and families will be gathering across our country to welcome the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.

“The lighting of the first candle of the menorah gives us pause to remember a story about the supremacy of hope over despair and the triumph of perseverance over oppression. For people of the Jewish faith, this eight-day celebration inspires a rekindling of faith in miracles, and serves as a reminder to never forget about the power of even the smallest of lights in dark times.

“This celebration is an opportunity for us all to recognize the important contributions the Jewish community has made to our country’s cultural landscape over many generations.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating Hanukkah a happy, blessed, and peaceful holiday.”

“Chag Chanukah Sameach!”
