Siinkohal tutvustame Toronto Eesti Seltsi juurde moodustatud uut organisatsiooni nimega Toronto Eesti Noorte Selts (T.E.N.S). Noortekogu on toetatud Toronto Eesti Seltsi poolt, kes on juba 75 aastat tegutsenud. Noortekogus on viis liiget, keda tutvustatakse allpool ja kelle üldine eesmärk on aidata Seltsil vahendada Kanada-Eesti ühiskonna noorte kokkutulemisi meie kogukonna üritustel.
Andres Jeeger on tegutsenud mitu aastat Lembitu skaudina ja niipea, kui ta oli vanem, sai temast Lembitu skautide juht. Andres on Eesti skautides väga aktiivne, viimastel aastatel on ta töötanud Põhjakotka skaudiprogrammi kallal. Andres toetab oma kogemustele eesti noortega Torontos ja Kotkajärvel, kus on juhtinud mitut talve- ja suvelaagrit. Ta soovib uues organisatsioonis osaleda, et veelgi enam kaasata eesti noori ja väljendada nende arvamust meie kogukonnale.
Kariina Järve on aktiivselt tegutsenud aastaid eesti kogukonnas. Ta on töötanud mitmes eesti laagris ning on olnud hellakeste abiline. Kariina on vabatahtlikuna osalenud mitmes mittetulunduslikus organisatsioonis, näiteks Estdocs (Eesti dokumentaalfilmide festival) ja EGO golfiturniiril. Praegu töötab Kariina T.E.S. Täienduskoolis ja T.E.S. Lasteaias ning tantsib rahvatantsurühmas Kungla. Septembris alustab Kariina õpinguid Nipissingi Ülikoolis, et saada algkooliõpetajaks. Kariina armastab lastega töötamist ja tal on tugev seos meie kogukonnaga.
Kati Kiilaspea on Torontost pärit ja on olnud kauaaegne aktiivne osaleja eesti ühiskonnas. Kati on praegu viimasel kursusel kultuuriõppes Ryersoni ülikoolis, spetsialiseerudes muusika alal. Ta laulab mitmes kooris, on osalenud gaidide tegevustes ja mängib Kõla orkestris ning õpetab ka T.E.S. Lasteaia kolmandat klassi. Kati on aidanud kaasa AKENi basaaridel ja on praegu rebane Filiae Patriaes.
Erik Kreem on aktiivne muusik ja osavõtja eesti ühiskonnas Torontos. Ta on mänginud mitmel üritusel klaverit ja on ka helilooja, kes on töötanud koos tuntud muusikute ja dirigentidega nagu Norman Reintamm, Margit Viia-Maiste ja Ene Lomp. Erik on lõpetanud eesti kooli, keskkooli ja gümnaasiumi ja tegeleb praegu ka Põhjakotka skaudisalgaga.
Sylvi Oja on eesti kogukonnas üles kasvanud. Teda rõõmustab Toronto noorte eestlaste uus põlvkond. Elades eesti perekonnas, on ta oma päritolu üle uhke. Sylvi on püüdnud võimalikult palju tegutseda eestluse hoidmiseks. Pärast Leaside’i keskkooli lõpetamist soovib Sylvi edasi õppida ja saada kunstialane bakalaureusekraad. Sylvi on praegu vabatahtlik abiline gaidluses ja abiõpetaja T.E.S. Täienduskoolis. Ta laulab segakooris Ööbik. Kui ta ei ole Eesti Majas, siis ta kas maalib oma kunstiklassis või otsib uusi hobisid. Eesti kogukonnas veedetud aja jooksul on ta leidnud siit oma parimad sõbrad.
We are proud to introduce the newly formed Toronto Estonian Youth Society, or T.E.N.S for short, a peer mentoring and social organization for youth, run by youth, and supported by the 75 year history of the Toronto Estonian Society. Our 5 core members, introduced below, are focused on connecting and bringing Canadian-Estonian youth together at various events geared towards creating a sense of unity and inclusivity. A detailed set of goals and concrete mandate will be set out in our next article, so please stay tuned!
Andres Jeeger is eager to work with TENS as its Chairman. He has spent his youth as a Lembitu Skaut and as soon he was older he became a juht for Lembitu skaudid. Andres has been very active in Estonian scouting, currently running the Põhjakotka skaut program for the past few years. Andres draws on his experience working with Estonian youth in Toronto as well as at Kotkajarve having run multiple winter and summer camps. He is eager to work with this new organization to further engage Estonian youth and voice their opinions to our community.
Kati Kiilaspea is from Toronto, Ontario and has been closely tied to and an active participant in the local Estonian community for a large part of her life. Kati is currently in her final year of cultural studies, with a music minor, at Ryerson University. Kati travels to Estonia for a month each summer to visit relatives and to immerse herself in the local culture. She sings in various Estonian choirs, has been in Guides and an active member of Kõla orchestra and teaches in the Estonian kindergarten. She has also helped out with the AKEN basaar for several years and is a member of the sorority Filiae Patriae.
Erik Kreem is an active musician and member of the Estonian community in Toronto. A pianist and composer, he has performed at numerous Estonian events, functions and concerts, having worked with such Estonian musicians as Norman Reintamm, Margit Viia-Maiste and Ene Lomp. A graduate of Toronto Estonian School, he is also an active member of Põhjakotka Estonian Scouts.
Sylvi Oja has grown up in the Estonian community her whole life and excited to be the new generation of young Estonians in Toronto. Coming from an all Estonian family, she is very close to her roots and strives to be involved as much as possible. Attending Leaside High School, her goal post-secondary is to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. Sylvi is currently volunteering for Gaidid, Toronto Eesti Kool, St. Peter’s Estonian Lutheran church and singing on Mondays with Ööbik. When she’s not at Eesti Maja, she’s either painting for her art class or finding new hobbies to take up. With countless hours spent in the Estonian community, and finding some of her very best friends here, Sylvi is proud to show her heritage and thrilled to see what the new year has to offer!
Kariina Järve has spent years as an active member in the Estonian community. She has worked at multiple Estonian camps as well as been an assistant leader with the Estonian guides and scouts. Kariina has volunteered at multiple charities and fundraisers including Estdocs and Ego golf tournaments. Currently Kariina is working at the Estonian school and Estonian daycare as well as dances with the Estonian kungla folk dance group. In September, she will start her studies to become a primary teacher at Nipissing University. Kariina is passionate about children and has a strong connection with the Estonian community.
