( In our last issue we printed a reaction to Jeffrey Tayler’s recent Atlantic Monthly article about the Baltics and NATO, “The next threat to NATO” that suggested the three Baltic Nations do not fit the bill for NATO membership. It was written by Andris Straumanis and originally appeared in Latvians Online. As a follow up we have American Estonian Vello Ederma’s e-mail information concerning Tayler) *** I just received this e-mail from the editor of the Estonian newsletter in the midwest - from Minneapolis. I think Tayler’s background should have been more clearly stated at the end of the Atlantic Monthly article on the Baltics. This is akin to real propaganda piece, and one could surmise that he may have gotten a cut from the Duma's $50 mil set aside for propaganda against the Baltics! A lot is more clearer now, including the thrust of the article and his interview with Latvia online. Vello "Guess what?! I woke up remembering that this fellow Tayler had written apiece for this same mag last year.-May, 2001. I kept it and read some parts to --- this morning. He became very upset, and more involved than the first time around - showing the author should have stated his total fondness for Russia, and should never be suggesting what future the Baltics have or what NATO should do. I am putting in quotes from former article. >>From the May 2001 Atlantic Monthly: Tayler: "I married a Russian. I made Moscow my home. My life - as much as it can be, given that I carry an American passport - is Russian." He says "devoted half his life to this country" and more. Would you say there is just a little conflict of interest? NO credibility! Somehow we should suggest to Atlantic Monthly that it should strive to be more objective!
