The U.S. Welcomes the Agreement of the three Baltic Prime Ministers on Energy
Press Release, April 28, 2009 The United States welcomes the agreement of the three Baltic Prime Ministers reached April 27 in Vilnius as an important step to ensure the long term energy security of the region.
In particular, the agreements to reduce barriers that hinder the free flow of electricity between the countries and to increase the interconnections between the Baltic and Nordic/European grids will be of great benefit to the region.
We particularly welcome the agreement in principle to proceed with an electricity link between Lithuania and Sweden, with the energy companies of Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden as equal partners in the project. The United States will continue to seek ways to work with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to ensure their common energy security, including through sharing and development of technologies for fostering renewable sources of energy.
