On the road to democracy, Kyiv makes a U-turn.
Sergey Sydorenko, Transitions Online KYIV | In the past several years, some have looked at Ukraine as an island of democracy in the region east of the European Union.
After the Orange Revolution, Kyiv held elections that were recognized as free and fair by international observers. For five years, there were no signs that basic freedoms – of speech and assembly – were under threat here. In that way, this country was different from its neighbors to the north and east.
In the near future that may no longer be true.
