Based on the news release by the International Estonian Centre project (IEC) on Sept 2nd, the Toronto Estonian House (EH) and Estonian Foundation of Canada (EFC) have closed the sale of their properties to a local developer DK Broadview Inc for approx $15 million. It is unknown at this point how the proceeds will be split between the IFC and EFC. This deal materialized very quickly after several previous attempts to sell the properties had fallen through for various reasons. The latest failed deal with Revera Inc was announced by the Estonian House just in July 28th.

Update #78
The International Estonian Centre Project (IEC) has entered its next phase: Estonian House in Toronto Ltd. (EH) and Estonian Foundation of Canada (EFC) are pleased to update the Estonian community that their Broadview group of properties has been sold to DK Broadview Inc. of Toronto for a base price of $15.6 million with a possible upward adjustment depending on the final density achieved by the purchaser on its proposed rezoning of the properties. With this sale, our community marks a major milestone in the creation of a new and dynamic International Estonian Centre in Toronto.

Beautifully written.

I, too, am of the younger generation. I, however, do not see change as something to run away from. As stubborn and traditionalist as we Estonians can be, we are all capable of adapting. The Eesti Maja is a place where we spent our childhoods and of which we have fond memories. I will be sad to see it go. But I’m also a realist. I think we are all well aware that the Eesti Maja is falling apart. But it isn’t the walls of Eesti Maja that teach Eesti Kool or the ceilings that do rahvatants or the old pipes that sing in meeskoor. These are people. Our ability to speak eesti keel or go to lasteaed is not tied to the building.

I’m saddened, too, but I’m saddened by the small collection of people who so adamantly refuse to participate in eesti ühiskond anywhere other than at 958 Broadview that they would give up their cultural community if it’s anywhere outside of the crumbling walls of a building with which they’re familiar. The same people who will leave Eesti Maja kicking and screaming and raking their nails into the walls in an effort to hold onto the brick and mortar, not realizing that their nails are what’s really tearing the hole in our community.

Sigh... If only these high, almighty people could understand that a full adult can understand the topic of responsibility. No need to drag someone down and assume they have no responsibilities simply because they are younger.

Maybe when you grow up, you will learn how to be nice towards others.
