Associated Press, Business Week, Riga European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet promoted the euro in Estonia on Monday as the Baltic nation makes preparations to adopt the shared currency in January.
Estonia will be the 17th nation to adopt the euro -- and the first from the former Soviet Union -- despite the eurozone facing its severest crisis since the currency's inception in 1999. Some member governments are struggling with heavy debt and big deficits.
Trichet said Sunday that Estonia's inclusion in the zone shows that the euro "is not a closed shop" and is open to all willing to meet the tough requirements.
