OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, today issued the following statement:
“Today, the Trudeau Liberals voted against a Conservative motion calling on the government to tell Canadians in what year the budget will be balanced. This vote reinforces that the government has no plan to balance the budget and that Justin Trudeau does not care about Canadians’ money.
“This year's deficit is $19.4 billion; more than triple what Justin Trudeau said it would be. The Trudeau Liberals have also added $60 billion to the federal debt; almost three times what they promised.
“Justin Trudeau continues to plunge Canada further into debt, despite the great economic fortunes he inherited: a balanced budget, booming US and global economies, roaring housing markets in Toronto and Vancouver and record low interest rates. All this good fortune added up to a $20 billion windfall in extra revenue last year. Trudeau squandered every nickel.
“Running continuous deficits means higher taxes to fund debt interest, which is expected to grow by two thirds to $37 billion a year, almost as much as we spend on health care transfers.
“Instead of keeping their money for groceries, gas and other family essentials, Canadians will pay more to bankers and bondholders.
“That is why balancing the budget will be a top priority when Conservatives return to government on a reasonable timeframe.”
