TORONTO, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - In 3 months, the TTC's Special Constables laid 58 Criminal and 13 Provincial charges against individuals placing graffiti on TTC property......
Through covert surveillance and a reporting/reward program for the TTC's
10,000 employees, graffiti vandals are being caught and prosecuted.
"We are laying criminal charges and adding to that provincial charges and
seeking restitution for the damage to public property," said Rick Ducharme,
TTC Chief General Manager.
Graffiti costs the TTC riders and taxpayers about $1 Million a year to
repair damage and replace glass.
"That's why we take this very seriously and commit the resources for
surveillance and prosecution," said Ducharme.
These charges involve 7 individuals who had been under separate
surveillance by plainclothes TTC Special Constables. The surveillance program
will continue and more arrests and charges are likely.
Toronto Police Service Staff Sergeant Heinz Kuck will present members of
the TTC's Special Constables with certificates recognizing their achievements
at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 9 on the southbound platform at Davisville
Station, 1900 Yonge Street.
