Liberals show little interest in concerns of visiting Parliamentary delegation

OTTAWA - York-Simcoe Member of Parliament, Peter Van Loan, participated in talks with a delegation of Parliamentary Representatives from Estonia at the House of Commons Foreign Affairs and International Trade committee on February 2, 2005.

meeting.

Van Loan, whose comments were backed up by the visiting Parliamentarians, called for the government to remove the insulting visa requirements for Estonians visiting Canada. Mr. Van Loan also insisted that in view of recent developments in Russia, Estonia’s legitimate security concerns need the support of Canada, and the establishment of full diplomatic representation in Tallinn. “A proper embassy in Estonia is long overdue” stated Mr. Van Loan. Unfortunately, few in the Liberal government showed any interest in the concerns of the Estonian parliamentarians. Other than the Committee Chair, the government seats sat empty for almost the entirety of the session, until a single Liberal appeared towards the end of the Committee hearing.

“I was disappointed at the lack of interest shown by the Liberal government” said Mr. Van Loan. “The delegation came here to discuss important issues such as visa requirements to enter Canada and full diplomatic representation in Tallinn and the Conservative Party was the only party in full attendance” he continued. “For my part I will continue to do everything in my effort to resolve these issues on behalf of Estonia” he concluded.
