"I have been working hard on the Foreign Affairs Committee, to ease the visa requirements between the Estonia and Canada, said Conservative MP Peter Van Loan (York-Simcoe-Jõekääru). Van Loan adds,
"As you know the private members bill failed in the house last September. The government didn't give a reason but I imagine it was because they lumped all countries together. It would be doubtful that there would be an onslaught of immigration from Estonia considering its low taxes and high standard of living."
"The other thing would be to improve the diplomatic relations between Canada and Estonia so that we would have more than a Chargé d'Affaires in the countries, so that Estonians (in Estonia) don't have to go to Riga, Latvia to get a visa (to come to Canada)," said Van Loan.
Because Van Loan's riding encompasses Jõekääru and Van Loan is half-Estonian, those Estonians that have their primary residence in Jõekääru may vote for an Estonian in Canada. You may find out more from the Estonian Central Council at 416-465-2219.
Good luck, Peter Van Loan!
