Viimsi, 2 December – Today two exhibitions were opened at the Estonian War Museum/General Laidoner Museum – the photography exhibition "Ten Years in NATO" and the exhibition "Pohjan Pojat" (Sons of the North).

The photographic exhibition “Ten Years in NATO” takes a look at the development of the Estonian Defence Forces from 2004-2014. The photos selected by photographer Tõnu Noorits and Captain Arvo Jõesalu convey the spirit of the era and its events and colourful moments from the various exercises, foreign missions and defence diplomacy in the last ten years, in which Estonia has been a NATO member. This is a continuation of a photographic exhibition put together in 2011 and devoted to the restored Estonian Defence Forces.

The exhibition “Põhja pojad” (Finnish: Pohjan Pojat, Sons of the North) was compiled on the basis of a collection belonging to “Estonia” Philatelic Society member Pertti Hujala and documents how Finnish volunteers fought in the Estonian War of Independence. Display items include letters, postcards, photographs and pins from Finnish volunteers. The exhibition also features books and newspapers that cover their activity in the Estonian War of Independence.

War Museum director Hellar Lill says the keywords of these exhibitions on events seemingly far-removed in time are friendship and camaraderie of soldiers, which have been important in all eras.

The exhibitions will remain open until February 2015. The exhibition “Ten Years in NATO” will then move on to other Estonian cities.

The Estonian War Museum is devoted to investigating, collecting, preserving and exhibiting of the public items and materials related to Estonian military history. It also deals with military research and cultivates international relations with other institutions of its kind.
