using the bridge.
MTO has been monitoring the condition of this bridge for several months
and increasing structural deterioration has been noted. Recent monitoring data
received by the ministry revealed that the rate of the bridge's deterioration
has accelerated. To prevent further deterioration, load restrictions will be
implemented.
Effective immediately, vehicles crossing the bridge will be restricted to
15 tonnes. Examples of vehicles that weigh over 15 tonnes include tractor
trailers and multi-axle dump trucks without loads.
Advisory signage will be posted to inform commercial carriers of the new
restrictions. A detour is available along Highway 502 between Highway 17 and
Highway 11.
The ministry has expedited the design and construction of a temporary
replacement bridge that will restore traffic flow to all vehicles in this
area. Contractors will work around the clock to install a temporary
replacement bridge. MTO expects this temporary replacement bridge to be in
place by January 2004.
The ministry regrets any inconvenience that this load restriction may
have on the travelling public. MTO appreciates the patience and support of the
community, and will continue to closely monitor the condition of the bridge.
