Among the greeters from abroad who sent congratulations to the Toronto Hiidlaste Selts on their 30th anniversary was Douglas Wells. The Wells’ globe trotting adventures have seen them settle (for now) in Paris, where Douglas is in the employ of the State Department. Some of those who heard about Douglas’ e-mailed greeting asked Tamara Norheim-Lehela, the head-hiidlane here as to how to acquire his books. The interest in Douglas Wells’ two books on his Estonian Peace Corps experience, “In search of the elusive Peace Corps moment - Destination: Estonia” and its translation into Estonian, published in the summer of 2003 as “Jänki seiklused Hiiumaal” remains high.

Wells’ success as an author can now be measured by the fact that the translation, “Jänki seiklused” has sold out its first print run. Peeter Sarevet of the publisher, AS Mats, informs us that this took place in the early summer. Some gentle pressure is being considered to get Douglas to write a sequel...

The Estonian movie-making world is also interested in bringing the book to the big screen. A proposal seeking financing is circulating. Douglas wrote in a recent e-mail that while there is nothing definite yet, the challenge has been taken up, and provided a few links to the idea, as expressed in the Estonian print media: http://www.hiiumaa.ee/index.php?idc=1041121100027521000&q=1>

Unfortunately, until (if) Douglas finds the time and desire to pen a follow up to his adventures we can only guide those readers interested in his work to his English language original book, and its American publishers, Xlibris in Philadelphia.

By far the easiest way of purchasing “In search of...” is on the Internet. Some people, chary of on-line purchases, unfamiliar with the ways of the web and leery of using credit cards may wish to consider direct purchases, which, however, are more costly, and take longer.

In most major cities one needs only to go to the local bookstore and ask for the book by ISBN number: 0-7388-6543-5. Most bookstores will then order the book for you. In Toronto we recommend Book City - there are two excellent and convenient locations, one near the Estonian House on the Danforth, the other near Tartu College on Bloor Street. Consult the White Pages.

Ostsin paar eksemplari sellest raamatust, ingliskeeles, mineval aastal jõulukinkideks. Kui Amazon.ca saatis need raamatud (väga kiirelt muuseas!!) minu kontorisse, hakkasin lugema ja ei saanud raamatut maha panna kuni olin lõpetanud. Ämm sai kergesti loetud raamatu kingiks.
Kerge lugemine... Väga humoorikalt kirjutatud.
