Wilfert Questions the Minister of Foreign Affairs on Tensions between Estonia & Russia
Ottawa- The situation with Estonia and Russia has deteriorated over the past few days; to the point where, the Estonian Ambassador in Moscow was physically attacked by a mob without help from the Russian police. This occurred after several nights of rioting in Tallinn by Russian youth sent into the Estonian capital by the Russian nationalist group Nashe Rossiya.
The Honourable Bryon Wilfert, Member of Parliament for Richmond Hill addressed this issue during Question Period today call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Peter MacKay to take actions to help ease the tensions between Russia and Estonia.
“The Foreign Affairs Minister has been silent about the rising tensions between Estonia and Russia for the past two weeks,” said Mr. Wilfert the Minister of Foreign Affairs needs to take action and support the people of Estonia and condemn Russian intimidation.” added Mr. Wilfert.
This situation extends well beyond Estonia’s borders and resonates with all Central and Eastern European countries, nations and communities. The crisis signals the reemergence of Russia as an economic, political and military superpower.
“Our NATO partners have expressed support for Estonia and have condemned Russian actions this government needs to make the same commitment. If this government is committed to having Canada play a role in international affairs we need to take action immediately,” said Mr. Wilfert.
